Building a memorable brand in the creator economy

Last night, while doom-scrolling Twitter instead of working on today's newsletter, I stumbled across a clip of Samir from Colin and Samir talking about the creator economy that stopped me mid-scroll.

In the clip, Samir articulated something I've been feeling but couldn't quite put into words about what truly matters in building a sustainable creator business in 2025:

"You could spend an hour on TikTok and not remember what you watched... Colin and I always think about this concept of memorable views versus forgettable views, and you want to be producing memorable views."

This hit me hard.

In a world obsessed with view counts, algorithms, and going viral, Samir was zeroing in on what actually matters: creating content that sticks with your people.

The death of monoculture

What really got me thinking was when Samir dropped this stat: "47% of Gen Z are a fan of something on the internet that no one they know personally is also a fan of."

Let that sink in for a second.

Nearly half of Gen Z are passionate about creators, communities, or content that none of their friends even know about. This isn't just a fun fact — it's a fundamental shift in how culture works now.

We're not moving toward fragmentation; we're already there.

The monoculture is dead. The era of everyone watching the same three TV channels or following the same handful of celebrities is over.

Instead, we're living in a world of tribes.

Chasing Mr. Beast vs. finding your people

"The challenge to be like the next Mr. Beast, to be like a massive monocultural brand... I find that to be not even exciting to me," Samir confessed in the clip. "I like meeting our audience and meeting them out in public and being like, 'Oh yeah. These are my people.'"

This resonated deeply with me because it's exactly what Creator Economy NYC has become.

When we started with just fifteen people in a Lower East Side bar two years ago, I wasn't trying to build the biggest creator community in the world. I just wanted to find my people.

Each month, when I see familiar faces return and new faces join, there's this moment of recognition: These are my people. They get it. This is my tribe.

From forgettable views to a memorable brand

So what does this mean for you, the creator trying to build something sustainable in a fragmented landscape?

  1. Focus on depth, not reach. 1000 true fans will take you further than a couple thousand casual viewers.

  2. Build for your tribe, not for algorithms. When you find your people, you'll know. They'll show up, engage deeply, and stick with you.

  3. Create memorable views, not just more views. What makes content truly stick isn't just quality…it's distinctiveness. Ask yourself:

    • Does this content have a unique perspective only I can offer?

    • Does it solve a specific problem for my tribe in a way no one else does?

    • Does it have a consistent, recognizable style that people will associate with me?

    • Would someone be able to tell this is my content even without seeing my name attached?

Your 2025 challenge

As we continue through 2025, I want to challenge you to stop chasing views and start building a tribe. Ask yourself:

  • Who are my people, really?

  • What makes my content memorable, not just consumable?

  • How can I deepen my connection with my tribe rather than just expanding my reach?

Because at the end of the day, as Samir so perfectly put it, what matters isn't how many people see your content — it's how many people remember it.

And the people who remember you? Those are your people. That's your tribe.
